The Clan in Florida
Clan Donnachaidh Society of Florida
By Louise Robertson
Please be so kind to pass this on. The president called me
some time ago to see if I would write out any memories we
had of our forming and early years. We are leaving for most
of the summer next week. Well, here goes....
Allan and I were new members of the Scottish American
Society. This group sponsors the Central Florida/Orlando
Highland Games. Immediately, Allan was made Treasurer of
the Games. There was no Clan Donnachaidh of Florida at the
Games in the early 1980s. We decided to be a clan sponsor
ourselves, so taking whatever "Scottish stuff" we had, we
set up a tent. Louise was in charge of the tent that day
because Allan was doing his duties as Games Treasurer.
People who knew only that they were a part of Clan
Donnachaidh signed the guest book that day. A few weeks
later we sent each one an invitation to come to our home. I
can't remember how many came nor who they were but Clan
Donnachaidh of Florida was formed. (At this time Allan and
Louise did not even know there was an international
society.) For a while we funded the sponsorships at the
games until our treasury grew. In those days there were not
so many games--Orlando, Dunedin and Miami. Later
Jacksonville started games. David and Nora Reid were our
first active members. They helped at those first games. We
traveled together, attended Society meetings in Halifax and
Scotland. Very soon Barbara and Larry Ginsberg joined so
the twosome became a threesome. (What fun we had!!!) Then
along came Pat and Gordon Robertson. Pat loved to decorate
the tent and one year we won the Best Decorated Tent award.
Gordon went after anyone that might be related to our clan.
Our group grew by leaps and bounds, thanks in large part to
Gordon. We did receive a charter while attending a
gathering in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Unfortunately it seems
to have been misplaced/lost through the years. There were
snapshots taken of the presentation. Brian Reid was the
international secretary at the time. We soon had a lot of
wonderful members joining and helping at the games. We were
the first clan at any of the games to be so large that we
had to rent two tent spaces and tents. We were the Honored
Clan once at the games near Miami. Our yearly meeting has
always been held after the Orlando games. For many years
Allan and Louise prepared a dinner and everyone was invited
to the Robertson home. When the group became too large for
a home, we moved to a clubhouse but Louise continued to
prepare the meal. Eventually we started going to a
cafeteria. Jack and Joan Robertson from Ohio always
entertained with their playing of the pipes and fiddle. One
year for Tartan Day, we all brought picnic lunches and
joined the celebration at the park on Park Avenue in Winter
Park. We have had picnics in the Robertson's back yard.
One year we had a Scottish Pizza Party in Ozona, FL.
Everyone was curious as to what Scottish Pizza might be.
Well, it is buy one get one free. So much for
wonderful memories. The End.
